⚡LLM API in 10 Minutes: From Sign-Up to First Call
Step-by-step: connect to the DeepSeek / Qwen API — sign up, get a key, send a request — with code samples and common-error fixes.
#API#Tutorial#Getting Started
Many developers get stuck on environment setup the first time they hit an LLM API. This tutorial gets your first request running in 10 minutes, using DeepSeek as the example (Qwen / OpenAI-compatible endpoints work the same).
Step 1: Sign Up and Get an API Key
Register on the platform's website, then create a new key under 'API Keys'. Store it safely — the key is shown only once.
Step 2: Send Your First Request
Most Chinese providers offer an OpenAI-compatible interface — just swap base_url and api_key. curl is the fastest way to verify:
curl https://api.deepseek.com/chat/completions -H "Authorization: Bearer $KEY" -d '{"model":"deepseek-chat","messages":[{"role":"user","content":"hello"}]}'
Step 3: Troubleshoot Common Errors
- 401 Unauthorized: wrong key or missing Bearer prefix
- 429 Too Many Requests: rate-limited — lower concurrency or request a quota bump
- model not found: model name typo — note chat vs reasoner variants
Once it works, put the key in an environment variable — never hardcode it into your repo. Next, try streaming output and function calling.
